Connect Klaviyo to an automation and NerdyTags sends your subscribers and leads to Klaviyo for you. New email subscribers join a Klaviyo list, and each contact form submission shows up as an event on the person's Klaviyo profile. Both are sent automatically from the moment you connect, and you can send earlier subscribers with one click, so your list and your flows are ready to go.
You'll set this up in NerdyTags Business under Automations. You'll also need access to a Klaviyo account where you can create a private API key.
Step 1: Open the automation
In the sidebar, go to Automations, then create a new automation or open an existing one.
Under Send to apps, click Connect an integration.
On the Integrations card, click Connect Klaviyo.

Want to do more with the same automation, like getting notified or posting to chat? See Automation actions: notify, email, tag and post to chat.
A Connect Klaviyo dialog opens with the message "Paste a key from your Klaviyo account. We check it works before saving." It lists the steps to create a key.

Keep this tab open while you create the key in Klaviyo.
Step 2: Create a private API key in Klaviyo
1. Open API keys
In a new tab, log in to Klaviyo and go to Settings > Account > API keys, then click Create Private API Key.
2. Choose the access
Choose Custom key and set these access levels:
Full access to Events, Lists, Profiles and Subscriptions. Klaviyo calls the Lists scope List, so look for that name.
Read access to Accounts.
Give the key a name you'll recognize, like "NerdyTags," and create it. Once it's created, Klaviyo lists the access it has:

3. Copy and paste the key
Copy the key. It starts with pk_. Paste it into the Private API key box in NerdyTags and click Connect.
Your key is never shown again after you connect, and it's only used to send your subscribers and leads to Klaviyo. You can disconnect any time to stop.
Step 3: Choose your list
Once NerdyTags has checked the key, the Klaviyo card shows Needs setup and asks you to choose the list new subscribers should join.

Pick a list from the Choose a list dropdown. Your choice saves right away, so there's no separate Save button.

The card then says "Subscribes new subscribers to the Email List list" (with your list's name) and shows what it sends: New subscribers, Form submissions. Both are sent automatically, so there's no separate switch for form submissions. You'll also see Send existing subscribers and Sync now buttons and an on/off switch.

Turn off double opt-in for your list
If your Klaviyo list uses double opt-in, Klaviyo sends each new subscriber its own confirmation email. Until they click the link, they show as Never subscribed in Klaviyo and won't get your campaigns.
Your subscribers already agreed to join on your NerdyTags page, so you'll usually want single opt-in. Klaviyo recommends this when consent is collected somewhere else. To change it:
In Klaviyo, go to Lists & segments and open your list.
Click Settings, then Consent.
Under Opt-in process, choose Single opt-in.

This only affects new signups. Anyone who's already waiting to confirm stays that way until they click the link in Klaviyo's email or subscribe again.
Send subscribers you already have
When you choose a list, NerdyTags sets a start date. Only people who subscribe after that are sent automatically, and the card lets you know: "Only people who subscribe after this was set up are sent. Use 'Send existing subscribers' for earlier ones." If you switch to a different list later, the start date resets, so the new list starts empty.
To send earlier subscribers too, click Send existing subscribers on the card. The button is there for 90 days after setup, and it sends subscribers from the last 90 days. You'll see how many people will be sent and can confirm before anything happens. Anyone already in Klaviyo is updated, not added twice.

When you click the button, a dialog shows how many people will be sent, and you can cancel or confirm:

This example is from Google Sheets. The dialog's wording matches the app you're connecting (sheet, audience, list or contacts), so for Klaviyo it talks about your list. After you confirm, the start date line and the button disappear from the card.
Don't see the button? That means all your subscribers have already been sent, or setup was more than 90 days ago.
What gets sent to Klaviyo
New email subscribers who join through your subscribe popup or email signup are added to your list.
Added as Subscribed. Each person joins your list with email consent set to Subscribed. Klaviyo shows this as subscribed via API.
No duplicates. If someone is already in Klaviyo, their profile is updated, not added a second time.
Here's how a subscriber looks in Klaviyo once they've been added:

How form submissions show up in Klaviyo
Form submissions become a Submitted NerdyTags form event on the person's Klaviyo profile. The profile is created, or updated if it's already there, using the submitter's email and name.
Form answers are saved on the event, each as its own property, along with the form name, the NerdyTags profile and the phone number. If two questions share a label, the second one gets a number, like "Budget (2)."
Email consent isn't changed. A form submitter stays Never subscribed unless they also join your list, and someone who's already subscribed stays subscribed.
Sent once. Each submission is sent one time, and Klaviyo also ignores repeats. Submissions without an email address are skipped.
Here's a form submission on a person's timeline in Klaviyo, with the email, form, message, profile and reason:

Because it's a regular Klaviyo event, you can put it to work:
Start a flow from it by choosing Submitted NerdyTags form as the metric trigger, for example to send a thank-you email.
Build segments on the answers, like everyone who picked a certain reason.
See every submission on the person's timeline.
When subscribers and leads show up
New subscribers and form submissions are sent automatically, usually within a couple of minutes. Subscribers from before you chose your list are only sent when you use Send existing subscribers.
Sync now only re-sends people who subscribed after the start date, or from the last 90 days once you've used Send existing subscribers. It never sends your whole history.
Unsubscribes and deleted subscribers
When you delete a subscriber in NerdyTags, or they unsubscribe, their email consent in Klaviyo is set to Unsubscribed. Their profile stays in Klaviyo, so you keep their history there.
Manage the connection
On the connected Klaviyo card you can:
Use the list dropdown to choose a different list. This resets the start date, so the new list starts empty.
Use the on/off switch to pause or resume sending subscribers.
Click Sync now to re-send recent subscribers right away.
Click the pencil next to the name to rename the connection.
Click the trash icon to disconnect Klaviyo.
If form submissions aren't reaching Klaviyo
If your Klaviyo key was created before NerdyTags needed access to Events, form submissions fail with the error "To send form submissions, the Klaviyo key needs full access to Events and Profiles," and admins get a failure notice.
Klaviyo doesn't let you change a private key's access after it's created. A key only has Disable, Clone and Delete. So the fix is to make a new key and reconnect:
In Klaviyo, create a new private API key with the access listed in Step 2: full access to Events, Lists, Profiles and Subscriptions, plus read access to Accounts.
On the Klaviyo card in NerdyTags, click Disconnect and confirm. The prompt says "New subscribers will stop syncing. Anything already sent stays where it is."
Click Connect Klaviyo, paste the new key, and choose your list again.
Once everything's working, you can delete the old key in Klaviyo.
Check that it's working
Run test on the automation is a dry run. It doesn't send anything to Klaviyo or other apps.
To confirm the connection, wait for a real lead (or subscribe or fill in a form on one of your profiles yourself), then check Recent runs on the automation, which shows the result for each app. In Klaviyo, look for the new profile in your list, or the Submitted NerdyTags form event on the person's profile.
